Breakups are tough and can have a profound impact on our mental health. The Love Better campaign by the New Zealand government is a unique initiative aimed at supporting young people who are going through a breakup. The campaign uses real footage of young people sharing their experiences of dealing with breakups, and offers healthy ways to process emotions.

According to research commissioned by the New Zealand government in 2022, nearly 80% of the country’s 16- to 24-year-olds have been in a relationship, and 87% of those have experienced harm that went beyond the normal hurt of breaking up. Additionally, 55% of young people are not confident or only “somewhat confident” they could end a relationship without harm.

While most of the hurt reported was emotional, one in six young people had faced physical arguments in their relationships. The Love Better campaign aims to address this issue by offering a supportive community for those who are freshly broken up, helping them cope with their emotions and prevent them from spiraling into depression.

The campaign recognizes the unique challenges posed by social media and the internet when it comes to breakups. Blocking an ex on social media and deleting their contact from our phones are common strategies to help us move on. However, the campaign also emphasizes that it’s normal to have all these feelings in response to a breakup and offers healthy ways to deal with them.

Breakups can lead to depression and other mental health issues. The Love Better campaign recognizes this and provides resources to help young people cope with the aftermath of a breakup. It’s important to acknowledge our emotions, seek support from friends and family, and take care of our mental and physical health during this difficult time.
